With our community’s safety in question, we take pride in our effective collaboration with federal and provincial agencies that enable us to reach you more extensively.
Interested in knowing what makes our Town safe? You came to the right page.
A key organization in this objective is the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP).
With the RCMP in town, our sense of community ownership has never been more apparent.
More importantly, having knowledge about the RCMP and its specifics allows you take safety to another level not just for yourself but for the community as a whole.
ABOUT THE RCMP
The RCMP is an agency of the Canadian Ministry of Public Safety and serves as our national police service.
Consisted of more than 28, 000 personnel, it is considered as one of the world’s most renowned police forces.
The RCMP detachment in our community is part of a far-reaching national security strategy.
The national, federal, and municipal scope of the RCMP is what makes it unique in the world.
Mandated by the RCMP Act, the RCMP enforces laws in our country under the authority of the Canadian Parliament. It is also tasked to administer justice in provinces and up to 180 municipalities.
Its aims include the prevention and apprehension of serious and organized crime. Although this might sound far from the scope of our community, it can affect all of us in a big way.
This would include the taxes that we pay, our car insurance premiums, our banking fees, and your health.
Another area that the RCMP focuses on is our youth. In this area, the RCMP strives to reduce youth involvement in crime, whether as victims or offenders.
The issues that surround this objective are bullying and cyber bullying, impaired and distracted driving, substance abuse, and youth violence.
To combat these issues, the RCMP employs sustainable responses that focus on risk factors, prevention, and early interventions.
This can be done through promoting youth engagement and empowerment.
Aside from these, our RCMP strives to promote national security, protect the welfare of our aboriginal communities, and safeguard the economic integrity of communities around the country.
OUR LOCAL DETACHMENT
Our municipal RCMP is committed to realizing these goals in a way that concretely impacts our community.
Not only do they provide policing on a 24-hour basis, they are also active in community events and organizations.
An example of this would be their participation in the Duke of Edinburgh award, an opportunity for our young leaders to cultivate the values of personal discovery, self-reliance, and responsibility.
This award aims to empower and guide our youth by learning effective communication and goal setting in a team-centric environment.
Another initiative that our local RCMP is involved with is the program called Two-wheel view.
In this innovative endeavor, our officers help create avenues for our community youth to learn about valuable life lessons through educational bicycle programs and expeditions.
These areas touched by this program include leadership, health and wellness, and self-esteem.
In addition, a vital service that our RCMP officers is victim services.
This plays an important role in reducing the negative impact of victimization.
The program aims to lessen the effects of trauma, enhance safety, encourage participation in the justice system, and prepare victims acting as witnesses for court proceedings.
Not only that, our RCMP officers are involved with other community activities such as coaching in soccer, playing dodgeball and floor hockey against school teams, and our involved with the local sea cadets.
All these initiatives come on top of an RCMP detachment with an impressive reach.
