Municpal by-laws are regulations approved by Council to safeguard and protect persons and properties.

Section 180 of the Municipal Government Act (MGA) states that a council may only exercise power through bylaws or resolutions.

Community Enforcement officers serve residents by enforcing these by-laws.

Passing a by-law involves certain legal procedures.

The steps to pass a by-law are prescribed in sections of the MGA and, depending on the nature of the by-law, will include:

  • Review by Council;
  • Publicity (where required);
  • Hearing (where required);
  • Three readings, and;
  • Signing.

If you have a complaint or question concerning a particular by-law, you may contact the Town office and you will be directed to the appropriate individual through (403) 823-6300.
