Council approves a policy to provide relief of Property Tax on destructed improvements

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

On Monday August 19th Council approved Policy no. C-02-19 providing guidance to council when asked to consider relief of Municipal Property Tax on improvements which have been destroyed or rendered uninhabitable as a result of extenuating circumstances.

"Providing some means of financial relief to those affected by rare and devastating circumstances such as a residential fire demonstrates Council's ongoing commitment to the Town of Drumheller core values, one of which is 'Valuing the people who live here'. It is with a high degree of optimism that a thick layer of dust will build upon it before the policy is ever referred to for guidance, in light of such circumstances again," stated Barbara Miller Deputy CAO/Director of Corporate Services.

"This policy gives Council a means of offering support to people affected by terrible events such as a fire," outlined Mayor Heather Colberg. "The policy also offers valuable guidance to current and future councils in cases, of what we hope will be rare events."

Note

Improvements relate to structures on the land and not the land itself. This is consistent with property tax bills.
